Pyrkiessämme ymmärtämään elämäämme joudumme järjestämään kokemuksiamme ajassa siten, että kykenisimme luomaan itsestämme ja maailmastamme koherentin kuvan. Jotta kykenisimme ymmärtämään elämäämme ja ilmaisemaan itseämme, kokemuksesta täytyy tehdä tarina. Tarinan teko määrittelee kokemukselle annettavan merkityksen. Kokemukset menneestä ja nykyisyydestä, sekä asioista, joiden ennustetaan tapahtuvan tulevaisuudessa, liitetään lineaariseksi jatkumoksi, jota kutsutaan kertomukseksi tai narratiiviksi.

Yksilöt tuottavat primaarisia narratiiveja elämästään ja pitävät niitä tietona itsestään. Niinpä kertomukset, joita ihmiset elävät läpi määräävät heidän vuorovaikutustaan ja toimintaansa ja elämän ja suhteiden kehittyminen tapahtuu tällaisten kertomisten kautta. Kokemuksemme on kuitenkin syvempää ja monimutkaisempaa kuin tuottamamme kertomus, eli kertomus ei koskaan kata koko kokemusta. Paljon kokemuksestamme jää siis kertomuksen ulkopuolelle. Kertomukset ovat täynnä aukkoja, jotka yksilön pitää täyttää voidakseen esittää tarinansa, ja nämä aukot elvyttävät eletyn kokemuksen ja yksilön mielikuvituksen. Aina kun yksilö kertoo tarinansa, hän samalla kirjoittaa elämänsä uudelleen. Jokainen tarinan kerronta on uusi kerronta, joka kantaa mukanaan ja laajentaa edellistä ja jo olemassa olevaa kerronta.

Foucaultin mukaan yksilö on alttiina vallankäytölle normalisoivien totuuksien kautta, jotka muokkaavat elämää ja suhteita. Nämä totuudet rakennetaan vallankäytön kautta. Ei ole olemassa objektiivisia totuuksia, vaan totuuksia, joille annetaan totuuden status. Ne ovat normalisoivia, koska ne määrittävät normit, joiden ympärille yksilöiden odotetaan muokkaavan elämänsä. Tarinankerronta on riippuvaista kielestä, ja kielellä annamme merkityksiä kokemuksillemme. Kieli ei kuitenkaan ole neutraalia toimintaa, vaan on olemassa tiettyjä kulttuurille ominaisia kielellisiä resursseja, joita kussakin kulttuurissa pidetään soveltuvina kuvaamaan yksilön kokemusta. Globaalit tarinat vs. alistetut tarinat: 1) haudatut, piilotetut ja naamioidut totuudet, ja 2) kielletyt ja rajoitetut totuudet, joilta kielletään tila (esim. vaihtoehtoinen lääketiede).


Ohjaukseen sovellettuna:
 

  • Tavoitteena on a) vaihtoehtoisten tarinoiden luominen, joihin sisällytetään elintärkeän ja aiemmin huomiotta jätetyn, vaihtoehtoisen kokemuksen aspektit, sekä b) näille kertomuksille tilan luominen.
  • Yksilö kokee tilanteensa ongelmalliseksi, koska hänet asetetaan niihin tarinoihin, joita muilla on hänestä ja koska nämä tarinat ovat siinä määrin hallitsevia (dominant story), että ne eivät anna tilaa yksilön preferoimille tarinoille. Yksilö saattaa myös itse tukea tarinoita, joita kuitenkin pitää epätyydyttävinä, jotka eivät sisällä yksilön kokemuksia tai jotka ovat vastakkaisia kuin yksilön kokemus.

    • Milloin yksilö on onnistunut vastustamaan ongelmaa ja olemaan tukematta sitä?
    • Miten siinä onnistui?
    • Mitä onnistuminen kertoo hänestä työntekijänä? Jne.
  • Ongelma ei siis ole ihminen eikä ihmisten välinen suhde.
  • Tärkeää rohkaista vaihtoehtoisiin ongelman määrittelyihin.
  • Ongelman eloonjääminen on riippuvainen sen vaikutuksista. Vaikutukset luovat ongelman eloonjäämissysteemin: ongelma pysyy elossa vaikutustensa ansiosta.
  • Kun poikkeavat tarinat on löydetty, yksilöä voidaan rohkaista liittämään niihin merkityksiä, eli kertomaan tarinaansa uudelleen ohjaajalle ja jatkossa muillekin tahoille.
